VET SCHOOL: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
GRADUATED: 2012
EXPERIENCE IN THE VETERINARY FIELD: has been a veterinarian for 10 years and has worked in veterinary clinics for 20 years

Dr. Shannon Vicario grew up in Syracuse, NY where she started working in veterinary clinics when she turned 16. From that moment she knew where her heart belonged. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Studio Art from Binghamton University in 2007. She graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She has always been interested in exotic animal medicine and furthered her education during an international wildlife course in Honduras, as well as externships in California and Connecticut that focused on exotic pet medicine and surgery.

Dr. Vicario worked as a small animal/exotic pet veterinarian and was the veterinarian and member of the board of directors for the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park for 4 years before moving to Texas in 2016. She worked in North Richland Hills for six years before coming to VO Vets as a veterinarian focusing on high quality small animal and exotic animal medicine, preventative medicine, surgery and dentistry.

HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF WORK: She is a fan of the Dave Matthew’s Band, The Office, taking care of her pets and plants, gardening, building vivariums, art, traveling to new places, cooking/and eating and learning new things.

PETS: Dr. Vicario lives with a myriad of pets, plants and her boyfriend Chris who brought her to Texas in the first place. She has 3 rescue dogs – Nimbus is a tripod Maltipoo who was found in the middle of a highway, Winnie is a terrier mix who was a stray hit by a car and Toby Flenderson is a diabetic Rat Terrier mix with Diabetes. She also has 2 parrots (Dakota and Jade), a Russian tortoise (Annie), and many different species of frogs and fish.

Colleen Phelan, DVM

VETERINARIAN Fear Free Certified, Cat Friendly Certified

Dr. Phelan’s love of animals started at a young age, but it was not until she was an adult that she was drawn to veterinary medicine. Dr. Phelan graduated with a degree in Chemistry and then earned an MBA, both from the University of Dallas, which lead to a career in finance and banking while trying to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. She quickly began volunteering with animal shelters and rescue groups and realized veterinary medicine was the perfect way to combine her love of animals with her scientific curiosity. Dr. Phelan is a 2020 graduate of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (Geaux Tigers!) and has worked in emergency veterinary medicine and general practice.

Dr. Phelan’s areas of interest include integrative medicine and dentistry. She trained in veterinary acupuncture at Chi University in Reddick, Florida.

When she is not working, Dr. Phelan enjoys reading, listening to live music, and watching live theater. She and her husband share their home with a Great Dane named Ruby Soho, a mostly mastiff named Woody, and a very vocal kitty named Magnolia.

“I strive to strengthen and preserve the human-animal bond with every client/patient I work with. To me, pets are family and I intend to offer the best quality care to them that I can. Pets do so much to brighten our lives and they deserve the absolute best in return.”

VET SCHOOL: Lincoln Memorial University
GRADUATED: 2022

I spent my early childhood in Laredo, TX and spent the rest of my years growing up all the way through college in Ruston, Louisiana. I attended Louisiana Tech University to obtain my Bachelors in Animal Science (Pre-Vet) before starting at Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine in Harrogate, TN. I have had animals my whole life and have always been passionate for animals of all species as well as science and biology. My special interests in the field include dentistry and soft tissue surgery as well as care for geriatric patients. I love all animals but I am particularly passionate about golden retrievers. At home, I have two golden retrievers, Cooper and Duncan, and three cats – Ivy (black and white), Yzma (sphynx), and Robbie (brown tabby). HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF WORK: In my free time I enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors, participating in dog sports including dock diving, agility, and obedience, and collecting/caring for houseplants.
